Description

Great Woodend is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It features brick-nogged timber framing on a stone plinth, with a painted brick gable on the cross wing and a tiled roof. The building has a 'T' plan, with each section consisting of two bays and an infilled rear angle. The cross wing is two storeys over a cellar, while the main wing is two and a half storeys.

On the front elevation, the cross wing is on the left and has a lean-to against its left return. There is a large external chimney on the left half of the gable with tiled offsets. To the right, there is a three-light casement window with a cambered brick arch above the cellar opening. The timber-framed main wing is set back on the right and has five panels high to the eaves, with floor levels lower than those of the cross wing.

A single-storey lean-to open porch with a timber post in the angle covers a four-pane window and a boarded door that is accessed by one stone step. To the right, there is a four-paned casement window and a two-light casement under weatherboarding with an iron opening light. The first floor features a smaller three-light casement with a cambered brick arch in the gable, along with two two-light casements and one three-light casement in the main wing. A gabled dormer above has a two-light casement.

An external painted stone chimney is located on the right return gable, topped with brick. Inside, the ground floor has a wide chamfer on the ceiling beam in the room on the right, and pyramid stops to the chamfers in the rooms on the left. There is a beam in the rear room with a wide, hollow chamfer, and a fireback from 1686 is found in the room on the right.
