Description

Allums is a farmhouse built in the 17th century with alterations made in the early 18th century and further modifications in the mid-20th century. The rear wing features Flemish-bond brickwork on the ground floor, with brick-nogged timber-framing above and a stone slate roof. The front is constructed of Flemish-bond brickwork on a stone plinth and has a tiled roof. The building is designed in an 'L' shape, consisting of a three-bay, two-and-a-half storey back that is one room deep, and a two-storey front with three windows, although the angle has been later infilled.

On the garden elevation, the end of the brick front is visible on the right. The ground floor has main posts that continue through, with framing between replaced brickwork covered by weatherboard. There are four-light, cyma-moulded casements on each side, with iron opening lights. The narrower centre bay features a boarded door with a rectangular four-pane fanlight, situated under a hipped porch supported by timber front posts. To the left, there is a cellar window with a cambered head, and to the right, a six-panel door that is flush, accessed by one stone step and sheltered by a swept hipped lead roof over an open porch, which is supported by iron rods set in large tapered stone bases.

On the first floor, the framing consists of two panels high, with angle braces connecting the main posts to the wallplate in the end bays. There is a four-light casement on the left, a blocked two-light window in the centre, and a three-light casement on the right, all with iron opening lights. The brick end on the right has no openings. The building features two gabled dormers with two-light casements in the timber-framed section, and an external chimney on the left gable. The brick front has dentil eaves, a hipped roof, and a large brick chimney on the ridge just to the right of the original building. The beams in the left and right rooms of the three-bay rear wing have wide hollow chamfers. The timber-framed house was enlarged with an early 18th-century wing at right angles on the right end, which became the new front.
