Description

The Old Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. It features brick-nogged timber framing, with some panels rendered and weatherboarding on part of the gable. The roof is thatched. The building has two bays, is one room deep, and stands at one and a half storeys tall, with the framing consisting of two panels high.

On the right side, there is a curved brace corner main post leading to the sill, with a two-light casement window and a small rectangular oriel window from the late 20th century, which is situated under a gabled hood. This oriel window has a boarded front and iron stays on the sides, and a slate roof. To the left, there is another two-light casement window and a boarded door located under a flat-pointed timber head. Above, there are two two-light casement windows in swept dormers, featuring iron opening lights.

The left return of the building shows curved crucks, which are hidden in the upper part of the gable by weatherboarding. The central brickwork is likely for a fireplace, with a small window on the right side and a similar window on the first floor to the right. A brick chimney is positioned on the ridge above. The front door was moved back to its current position in the mid to late 20th century; it was previously located where the oriel window is now. A central cruck truss was noted in 1970. The Old Cottage forms a group with Great Wadley, the Old George, and Ann Cam's School.
