Description

The Old George, now a house, shop, and house, was probably built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick in an English garden wall bond to a plinth, with Flemish bond above, and has tiled roofs. The building is in an "L" shape, with a two-storey wing projecting to the road and a three-storey wing set back on the right, originally four windows wide. A projecting garage and shallow steps are on the right of the facade and are not particularly noteworthy.

The main entrance has a six-panel door at the top of steps, the upper panels being fielded, the lower two flush, with a semi-circular fanlight containing radiating glazing bars. Fluted Doric pilasters flank the door, each topped with a separate cornice, leading to an open floor beneath a pediment with mutules on the soffit. Either side of the door are 16-pane sashes, each set within a rubbed brick arch. The first floor has similar windows on either side, with a plain sash window in the centre, also within a rubbed brick arch. A date plaque reading "1884 B" is positioned between the two left-hand windows, although its significance is unclear. The second floor has shallow windows, with eight-pane sashes on either side and six panes in the centre, set beneath a timber fascia. Chimneys are present on the left and on the right gable.

To the left is a shop, built in the same style as the main building. It features a tall six-pane window with a rubbed brick arch on the ground floor. A stable door, accessed by four stone steps (the lower two fielded, the upper six glazed), is in the corner, with a cambered brick arch above. The first floor has a three-light casement with an iron opening light, also under a cambered brick arch. The second floor has a flat-headed three-light casement, with eaves matching the house on the right and at the same level; a chimney is on the left gable.

The projecting wing (Old George) has a boarded door to the cellar, under a cambered brick arch. On the ground floor at the rear is a two-pane sash window with a rubbed brick arch. Above this is a mullion and transom window with a flat head. The eaves are dentil. The front has a canted bay with a 16-pane sash and a flat lead roof. Above the bay is a four-pane casement on the left and a 16-pane sash with a flat head. A hipped roof extends over a narrow lean-to of the same construction. An entrance to the projecting wing is on the left return.

The building forms a group with The Old Cottage and Ann Cam's School.
