Description
Ann Cam's School is a school and former school house, dating from 1825, with an enlargement in 1883 by Mr. Waller. The original section has an ashlar stone plinth, while the later addition is built of Flemish-bond brickwork. It features a slate roof. The building consists of a two-storey central block flanked by parallel single-storey wings, two bays deep, with a single-storey brick extension across the front of the centre. The front façade is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting gabled centre featuring double, half-glazed doors leading up three steps beneath a cambered brick arch. To either side of the centre are lower wings with a three-light casement window under a lean-to roof with hipped ends. A boarded door leads up three steps on each return. Set back behind the main wings are earlier gables with three-light windows featuring intersecting timber tracery and plain stone surrounds. Brick chimneys are present on the entrance and left and right returns. The first floor of the centre section aligns with the set-back gables, containing two two-light casements, with a datestone positioned between them. Above this is a pedimented gable bearing a stone plaque inscribed 'ANN CAM'S SCHOOL'. A brick chimney exists on the left return. The fanlight above the original front door has intersecting tracery. The building forms a group with the Old George, Great Wadley and the Old Cottage and is historically documented in "Dymock down the Ages" by The Rev. J. E. Gethyn-Jones and "Gloucestershire, the Vale and the Forest of Dean" by D. Verey.
