Description
Nos. 71 and 73 Stortford Road are a pair of cottages that were originally one small house, dating from the 16th century. They are timber framed and plastered, with a thatched roof that is half hipped at the northern end and gabled at the southern end. The cottages are one storey high with attics, featuring two eyebrow dormers on the west elevation.
No. 71 has 20th-century leaded light casements and white weatherboarding on the northern gable elevation, along with a ridge line stack and a 20th-century rear extension. No. 73 includes a 20th-century porch made from medieval timber with a reused ogee doorhead, a projecting cast iron and leaded light window on the southern end, an old cast iron window at the rear, and a 20th-century lean-to extension on the southern end.
Inside, the cottages reveal the former open hall house layout, with a solar or parlour at the northern end. This area retains a five-light diamond mullioned window in the first-floor west wall. The structure features straight bracing, jowled posts, and a raised collar tie beam-less truss over the hall to support the windbraced side purlin roof. There is a later inserted inglenook fireplace with a timber mantel beam. No. 73 includes a part 18th-century extension, which likely incorporates a reused ship's mast as bridging joists, and is part of the service end of the earlier open hall house.
