Description
No. 8 North Street is a mid-18th century house and shop located in Wisbech. The building features painted stucco and brick, with a slated mansard roof that has asbestos sheets on the rear wing. It has a tall rear chimney stack and stands two storeys high with an attic. There are decorative bands at the cornice and first floor, along with a shallow parapet. The property includes two flat-roofed dormer windows with casements and three first-floor hung sash windows that are shaped to segmental arches, complete with keystones and stone cills.
The shop front is large and projecting, consisting of a four-light 19th-century shop window, flanked by a passage entrance to the north and double glazed shop doors to the south, all set within a common wooden architrave. A side entrance to the rear wing features a pedimented doorcase from the 18th century. Inside, the building has exposed chamfered ceiling beams and a very fine mid-18th century panelled room above the shop, which includes a contemporary richly ornamented doorcase and chimneypiece.
