Description
Nos. 3 and 4 Old Market is a mid to late 18th century house and shop with a side entrance to the north that provides access to a warehouse at the rear. The building is constructed of local brown brick and features slate and asbestos roofs with end stacks. It stands three storeys tall with a basement. A stone band runs along the cornice and the second floor. The façade includes four twelve-paned, recessed hung sash windows set in cambered gauged brick arches, with a central blind window on the first and second floors. The second floor windows are smaller and have late 19th century replacement hung sashes. The late 19th century shop front has two large four-light windows flanking glazed double doors, with plain pilasters at the doorways and quoins topped with a common entablature. Inside, there is a well-designed open-string geometric staircase featuring square-sectioned balusters and a mahogany handrail, along with panelled window shutters and reveals.
