Description
Nos. 8 and 9 Old Market are two houses from the second half of the 18th century, which share an impressive street facade. They underwent early 19th-century alterations and are constructed of local brown brick with slate roofs and end stacks. The buildings rise four storeys and feature a hipped three-storey rear wing along with two gabled extensions. The facade consists of six bays, with the two central bays slightly projecting. A parapet with four inset brick panels and stone copings crowns the structure, along with a central pediment and a cornice made of moulded stone with modillions.
The second and third floors are adorned with stone bands, and the third floor has six recessed six-paned hung sash windows set in gauged red brick arches, complete with keystones and stone cills. Below these windows are inset brick panels. The second-floor windows are similar but have twelve panes. A stone balcony with cast iron railings, supported by cast-iron brackets, is located at the first floor, featuring full-length casement windows with margin lights. There are two matching entrances, one to the left of centre and one to the right, both with wide half-glazed, panelled doors in plain architraved doorcases, topped with rectangular fanlights. The buildings have a moulded stone plinth. Inside, there is a plain 19th-century closed string staircase.
