Description
Nos. 28 and 29 on Old Market are a pair of mid-18th century houses. They are built from red brick and topped with slate roofs. The buildings rise three storeys and feature six 'bays', with the central two 'bays' slightly projecting and topped by a pedimented parapet. The central window on the second floor has an ogee head and interlacing glazing bars, set within a gauged red brick arch. Above this, there is a Palladian-style window on the first floor that matches the entrances below. The entrances consist of two six-panelled doors with patterned fanlights, which are recessed in wooden, round-headed doorcases that have fluted pilasters and a shared broken pediment. There is a stone step leading up to the doors. The flanking 'bays' feature stone bands at the first and second floors, with four six-paned recessed hung sash windows on the second floor set in cambered gauged red brick arches, and four twelve-paned windows on the first floor. The ground floor has hung sash windows without glazing bars. Inside, there are two similar original staircases.
