Description
Barclays Bank, built in 1878 by Boardman of Norwich, is a bank designed in the Florentine Renaissance style. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof with end stacks. It stands two storeys tall and has a deep, moulded stone cornice, a stone band, and a plinth with rusticated quoins. The first floor has five hung sash windows, each with shouldered, segmental architraves and keystones. The large central window is a three-light design divided by columns, set on a stone cill with round-headed arches and keystones. To the right of the main entrance are two windows, and to the left is a larger balancing window. The entrance features double, panelled doors.
Inside, the bank retains original wall panelling and has a central, large oval-planned counter. The ceiling is divided by plastered beams that have bands of guilloche decoration. The north wing has a contemporary facade with five bays and three storeys, while the original building may date back to the 18th century.
