Description

No. 32, Sulehay House, is a house dating to 1723, as indicated by a rainwater head. A side entrance on the east was added in the 18th century and raised to two storeys in the 19th century. The building is constructed of local red brick with stone bands and a plinth band, and has rusticated quoins from the first floor. It is three storeys high with a basement, and has four end stacks. Parapets with stone coping and two brick panels are present on both the north and south elevations. The windows are twelve-paned, hung sash windows set in cambered gauged brick arches with stone cills; the ground and first floor windows are larger. The side entrance is approached by stone steps with iron railings, leading to a round-headed, moulded stone architrave featuring lion masks, above a six-panelled door with a patterned fanlight. A brick pier with a stone cap, urn finial, and plinth terminates the boundary wall to the east. The interior contains a fine, original open-string staircase with carved brackets to the newels, which feature volutes and leaf swags, and carved leaf ornament to the stair risers. Original features include panelled doors, raised and fielded panelling, and cornices.
