Description

Anvil Cottage, Jasmine Cottage, and Old Chequers Cottage are a house, originally one dwelling, later divided into three. The building dates to the 17th century and was altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with rendered and painted brick infill, and replacement brick walling, and has plain tiled roofs that are raised at the north front. The house has an L-shaped layout; the main east/west range has four framed bays, with a two-bay wing attached to the rear of the west end. A chimney was inserted into the second bay from the west of the main range, creating a lobby entry plan, with a ridge stack. There’s also a large external chimney with offsets to the rear of the east end bay, a rear wing gable end, and a 19th-century external stack at the west gable end. Originally single-storey with attics, the main range is now two storeys. The timber framing consists of two and three panels from sill to wall-plate, with an additional row above when the roof was raised. There are long straight braces in the lower corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with struts. Windows are mainly 20th-century casements. The front elevation has four windows, one in each bay; the ground floor has three 2-light windows and a bow window, and the first floor has four 2-light windows. Anvil Cottage has a 20th-century gabled timber porch situated beneath the ridge stack. Jasmine Cottage’s entrance is in the east gable end and features a glazed porch and stable door, with an attic light in the gable above. Old Chequers Cottage, located in the rear west wing, has an entrance on the east elevation and an attic light in the gable end.
