Description

Chequers Barn is a 16th-century granary with an adjoining haybarn, partially rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century when the haybarn was added, and restored in the mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with brick infill and a plinth, covered by a half-hipped plain tiled roof. The granary has two framed bays aligned north/south and two levels. The framing includes three square panels from sill to wall-plate. The north gable end reveals some of the original wall frame. The east elevation features a long swept brace, while the south gable end has a long straight brace. The granary has collar and tie-beam trusses with struts. C20 leaded casement windows are found throughout. The west-facing elevation, which faces the house, has a two-light window and a square window on the ground floor, and two windows and a rectangular window above. A stable door is located in the north bay. Attic lights are set into the gable ends. The barn, with its own plain tiled roof, adjoins the northeast side of the granary and has two bays, with a wagon bay at the west end featuring cambered-headed cart entries and double doors. The barn has a dentilled eaves cornice and diaper ventilation patterns within the brick walling. A mid-19th century single-storey brick wing adjacent to the northwest side of the granary is not included as part of the listed structure. The barn and granary are included for their group value.
