Description
Chequers House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early to mid-19th century, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick on a lias limestone rubble plinth and features a shallow-pitched hipped slate roof with end brick stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, with the main range aligned north/south and a north wing. It is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice.
The west front elevation consists of four bays. The windows are glazing bar sashes with gauged flat heads; the ground floor windows are 12-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows are single-hung 9-pane sashes. The main entrance is located in the second bay and features a well-crafted, re-used doorcase from the late 18th century. This doorcase includes an open pediment, a panelled soffit, engaged Doric columns, a rosette-decorated entablature, and a 6-panelled door, four of which are raised and fielded, along with a traceried segmental fanlight. The right gable end of the house appears to have been rebuilt in the 20th century. Chequers House and its associated farm buildings occupy a prominent site at the junction of Church Road and Old Turnpike Road.
