Description

Nos 6 to 8 on Market Street is a shop and cafe that dates back to the 17th century, although it was refronted in the early 19th century and underwent further alterations in the mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with brick infill and has been refronted in painted brick, with additional brick walling in other areas. It features a plain tiled roof and consists of three framed bays aligned from north-east to south-west, standing two storeys tall. The timber framing is exposed at the south-west end, where one row of panels remains, along with a collar and tie-beam truss supported by two struts beneath the collar and a V-strut above.

On the south-east front elevation, there are three first-floor 3-light 20th-century casement windows. The shop front for No 6 spans two bays and boasts a prominent entablature with a central pediment, heavily moulded panelled pilasters flanking plate glass windows, and a central half-glazed door topped with a segmental fanlight, all set within a moulded surround on corbels. The shop front for No 8 is smaller and features simpler detailing, with panelled pilasters beside a 2-light window. To the right, there is a separate doorway with a heavily moulded surround and a square head with rounded corners; the door is half-glazed and includes a transom light above.
