Description

3, 4 and 5 George Street is a terrace of three shops with accommodation above, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later additions and early 19th century refronting. The building is constructed of brick with stucco dressings and features a tile roof with brick stacks. It stands three storeys high and has an eight-window range, topped with wooden eaves.

No 3 has a 20th-century shop front that includes panelled pilasters, a fascia, and a cornice, with brick infill, narrow windows, and a central entrance. No 4 features a late 19th-century shop front with a plinth displaying gilded lettering under glass, end piers with turned balusters, a fascia with gilded lettering under glass, and enriched iron cresting. Its plate glass windows are flanked by slender colonnettes, and it has a recessed door with an etched glass panel and a canopy. No 5 has a 20th-century shop front, with the first floor showcasing windows that have stucco wedge lintels over twelve-pane sashes. The three windows on the left end (No 3) have twelve-pane top-hung casements, while the second floor has six-pane sashes, three of which have horns, along with a painted blind window to the left of centre. The building features end stacks and three cross-axial stacks, and No 4 has a round clock face.

The rear of the building has varied wings and extensions. Inside, No 4 retains many original fittings, including counters and glass-fronted cupboards, while No 5 is noted for having a stone vaulted cellar. No 4 is particularly recognized as a well-preserved example of a late 19th-century shop front and interior.
