Description
No. 1 George Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It likely dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations. The building is finished in stucco, which probably covers a timber frame, and has a tile roof with a brick chimney. It stands two stories tall and features a two-window range. The first floor juts out over the ground floor on the George Street and Bolebridge Street sides, topped with a plain parapet. The ground floor has a shop front from the late 19th or early 20th century, which includes panelled pilasters, a bracketed fascia, and a recessed corner entrance. There are two casement windows on the first floor. A chimney stack is located at the rear of the ridge. Inside, there is one exposed wall plate, but the roof was not inspected. The building has a timber-framed structure, which is concealed by later modifications, as illustrated in E.B. Hamel's 1829 drawings of Tamworth.
