Description

36 and 36A George Street are a late 17th-century building, altered in later centuries, comprising two shops and two flats in Tamworth. The building is constructed of brick with a plastered front and has a tile roof with brick end and cross-axial stacks. It forms an L-shaped plan and is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a three-window front. A wooden cornice runs along the top. The ground floor contains 20th-century shop fronts. The first floor has three 19th-century canted oriels with coved bases, pilasters and dentilled cornices, featuring 2:4:2-pane sash windows. The attic has three hipped dormers. An enriched tie end plate is also present. The rear of the property includes a small gabled wing with a later addition and a 19th-century lean-to outshut. A carriage way to the rear has a beam with stepped stops. The interior of the building includes chamfered beams to the first floor, one beam with run-out stops in the wing, and a splat-baluster staircase.
