Description

Nos 19 and 20 on Load Street is a house that has been converted into two shops and two flats. It dates from the early 17th century but was refronted in the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The building features a timber frame clad in brick and has a slate roof with a central stack.

It stands three storeys high and has a dentilled brick cornice. There are five windows with boxed glazing bar sashes, painted rubbed brick heads, and keystones. The second floor has similar windows with 9-pane sashes, with the central and right-hand windows being blind. The ground floor has a flat canopy across the entire front.

On the left side, there is a passage with a plain wooden architrave leading to an early 18th-century boarded door. The shop front for No 19 to the left is pilastered and features a multi-pane window, with an entrance that has a wooden architrave, a 2-pane overlight, and a half-glazed door. The shop front for No 20 on the right is symmetrical, with two plate glass windows flanking a central recessed entrance that also has a half-glazed door.

At the rear, the building shows exposed timber-framing with carved decoration and quadrant decorative braces in the square panels. Inside No 20, there is an open well staircase with turned balusters leading from the first floor.
