Description

Nos 13 and 14 on Load Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1636 and has undergone early 19th century and mid-20th century alterations. The building features a timber frame with lath and plaster infill and a tiled roof, arranged in a U-plan. It stands three storeys high with projecting gabled wings and a gable on the main range. All the tie-beams are jettied on consoles, with a jetty at the first floor level.

The building has three windows on the upper floors: two five-light casements and a four-light casement on the second floor, and two three-light casements and a four-light casement on the first floor. On the ground floor, there is a carriage entrance to the left and two shop fronts. The central shop front features early 19th century infill between the projecting wings, with a flat roof, two shallow bows supported by wooden pilasters, a central entrance with engaged columns leading to a two-leaf half-glazed door, and a pilastered shop front with a plate glass window and a half-glazed door to the right.

The framing of the building includes close-studding with a mid-rail, and the gables have close-studding below the collar with a king-post above. The date of construction is carved on the tie-beam of the central gable.
