Description

This is a house, now used as a bank and offices, dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and some later additions in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone detailing and has a hipped tile roof.

The north-east front has four storeys and originally featured 3 + 3 + 3 windows, although the left-hand half has been rebuilt recently in brick with three top-hung casements. A central, advanced three-window bay is quoined and surmounted by a stone coped pediment, which is capped by an eagle finial. The central window of this bay has a stone architrave with a broken pediment and Corinthian pilasters. All windows are glazing bar sashes, within rubbed brick heads that contain enriched keystones. The second floor features a central window with a rusticated architrave, keystone, and moulded cornice. The third floor’s central window has an eared stone architrave with a keystone, while other windows on this floor have semi-circular heads with enriched keystones. A recessed shop front is located roughly in the centre, featuring a moulded wooden architrave and a half-glazed door. To the right of the shop front are two glazing bar sashes under rubbed brick heads with keystones; to the left is an entrance with a stone doorcase, featuring engaged Doric columns, an open pediment, a fanlight, and a six-panelled door.

The building projects out onto Load Street and also has a north-west front of four storeys and six windows. This building displays group value, contributing to the character of the area.
