Description

No 62 and 62A on Load Street is a house that has been converted into two shops and flats. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century, mid-19th century, and some late 20th century changes. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill and a machine tile roof. It stands four storeys tall and has a modillioned cornice, with the second and third floors jettied.

The front has two square bay windows that rise from the first to the second floor, featuring 3-light casements on the first floor and 2-light casements on the second floor. The third floor also has 2-light casements. The ground floor has a pilastered shop front with scroll brackets supporting a blind box, two plate glass windows, and recessed entrances in the centre with glazed doors (No 62 is to the left and 62A is to the right).

To the right, there is a passage that is part of this building, which has a stuccoed facade above, also four storeys high. This section features 8-pane sash windows on the first and second floors and a single-light casement on the third floor. The door has four raised and fielded panels. The framing of the building is highly decorative, with console brackets supporting the jetties, quadrant braces in the framing, and two square panels high on the first and second floors. The third floor has two square panels high with quatrefoils in the panels, raised in the 18th century, with the framing above consisting of a single rectangular panel high. The rear wall displays exposed square framing and two gables.
