Description

Nos 59 and 60 Load Street are likely two houses that have been converted into two shops, a house, and flats. They probably date from the early 17th century but were refronted in the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The buildings have a timber frame clad in brick and a tiled roof.

No 60 features shops on the street front, with a passage on the right-hand corner called "No Road," which leads to No 59 Load Street, located at the rear of No 60. The structure stands four storeys tall and has a dentilled brick cornice. The front has three windows: a 16-pane sash window on the left, and two glazing bar sashes with stone sills and plastered wedge lintels. The second floor mirrors the first, while the third floor has two single-light casements on the left, followed by a boarded door, and a blind window on the right.

On the ground floor, there are two shop fronts; the left one is a 20th-century design with pilasters and a shallow bow window, featuring a half-glazed door to the right. The larger shop front on the right is from the 19th century, with pilasters and scroll brackets supporting a blind box, and a central half-glazed door flanked by multi-pane shop windows. The entrance to "No Road" is located at the right-hand corner.

The rear wall of No 60 has a band at the first floor and a dog tooth band at the second floor, which also features a square label above a blocked window. A rear wing connects No 60 to No 59, spanning "No Road," and includes some 17th-century timber framing. The framing of No 60 is visible in the passageway, showing evidence of a first-floor jetty.
