Description

The Bewdley Institute is a building that originally served as a house and is now a club with two shops. It dates back to 1632 but was partly rebuilt in the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with rendered infill, and parts have been rebuilt in brick with planted framing and ashlar dressings. It has a machine tile roof and ridge stacks.

The building stands two storeys tall with attics, which are lit by casement windows in the gables on either side, along with a central gablet above a roof light. The gables are adorned with 17th-century carved bargeboards and finials. There are four windows: one 3-light casement and three 5-light casements, with the rightmost one located under a jettied 17th-century gable.

On the ground floor, the façade is primarily brick, featuring a carriage entrance on the left with a segmental head and engaged stone columns. To the left of this entrance is a 5-light casement window, followed by two 3-light casements, all with stone dressings. The entrance to one shop is positioned to the right of centre, featuring a 2-pane overlight and a glazed door, while the entrance to the other shop is to the left of the right window, with an overlight and a half-glazed door.

The original timber framing is mostly preserved only at the right gable, which is close-studded. The date "1632" is inscribed on the lower of two collars, and the tie-beam bears the initials "M/ WB".
