Description

No 1 High Street is a house that is now part of a house and a shop. It dates from the early 18th century, with mid-19th century and some late 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of brick and features a hipped tile roof with stacks at the rear. Positioned on a corner site, it has a front facing Load Street.

The structure is three storeys high with an attic that is lit by a gabled dormer. It has a moulded wooden cornice and a band at the first floor. There is a small projection to the right, with two plus one windows. The windows include boxed glazing bar sashes, a 4-pane boxed sash, and another boxed glazing bar sash, all set under rubbed brick heads. The second floor windows are similar.

On the ground floor, the entrance is located diagonally at the left-hand corner and features a glazed door. The shop front has a modillioned cornice, with a pilaster to the left and a window made of two sheets of plate glass. The Load Street front has three windows on the first floor, which are boxed glazing bar sashes under rubbed brick heads, with similar windows on the second floor. The ground floor also contains the shop front.

Inside, the upper storeys are connected to No 2 High Street. The interior features six-panelled mahogany doors with brass fittings and some re-set 17th century panelling at the stair head.
