Description
The Royal Oak Hotel is a public house that dates from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill, some weatherboarding, and painted brick additions. The roof is plain tiled and includes a 19th-century brick ridge stack and end stacks. The building consists of three framed bays aligned north-east to south-west, with a central chimney and three storeys. The framing is primarily composed of five panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The front elevation displays six rows of panels at the first and second floor levels, adorned with partly cusped concave lozenge decoration. Collar and tie-beam trusses with struts are visible at the gable ends, and the roof has been raised to accommodate the second storey.
On the south-east front elevation, all windows are leaded casements, with three 3-light windows on both the first and second floors. The ground floor features a flat-roofed 19th-century addition, which has narrow pilasters flanking an 8-light window on the left, a 3-light window, and a canted bay window on the right, leading to a central round-headed archway. This archway opens into a small lobby with doorways on each side. Above the archway is an ornate cast iron bracket that supports an octagonal lantern. The rear of the building has substantial additions, and the interior has been altered due to its conversion into a hotel.
