Description
The Old Market Hall is a former market hall built in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick with blue brick dressings and features a plain tiled conical roof that has overhanging eaves supported by shaped brackets and a raised ridge. The roof includes a louvred copper section with terracotta ridge tiles and was originally topped with end finials. The building has an oval plan and is a single storey with a chamfered plinth, designed in the Gothick style.
The upper half of the walls is filled with a continuous row of four-light traceried windows that have square heads and projecting blue brick sill courses. There are entrances at both the south-west and north-east ends, each featuring cusped ogee-arched heads that are integrated into the lower part of the windows. The south-west entrance has a set of double doors, while the north-east entrance has a pair of gates.
Inside, the floor is laid with blue brick herringbone paving, and there are two semi-circular benches, one outer and one inner, supported by cast iron, located on either side of the central through-passage.
