Description
Nos 16 and 17 Market Square is a house that has been divided into two separate units. It dates from the 17th century and has undergone alterations in the early 19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, and the ground floor is stuccoed. It features a plain tiled roof and a brick stack at the rear. The structure consists of two framed bays aligned east to west and stands two storeys high with an attic.
The framing includes four and five panels from the first floor level to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners at the east end. The gable ends have collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and V-struts above the collar. The north front elevation displays two 6-pane sash windows on both the ground floor and first floor, with raised keyblocks above the ground floor windows. Each entrance is adorned with flat canopies supported by moulded corbels, moulded architraves, and half-glazed 19th-century doors. There are also attic lights located at the gable ends.
