Description

The Market Tavern is an early 19th-century public house, representing a remodelling of an 18th-century building. It was altered again in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, with some sections painted and others stuccoed, and has hipped roofs covered in plain tiles. A gable-end parapet with kneelers is present on the southwest side. The original plan comprised two main ranges, one facing north and the other west, with a later addition on the southeast corner. The building is two stories high with an attic containing dormers.

The main north elevation has three and a half bays and features a twelve-pane sash window with a basket arched head, a four-pane sash with a cambered head, a blocked window, and a blocked archway with a cambered head on the ground floor. The first floor has three twelve-pane sashes and an eight-pane sash, all with basket arched heads. The main entrance, located at the centre of the three-bay section, has a gabled canopy supported by shaped brackets, and a partly glazed 20th-century door. The south elevation includes two former 19th-century shop fronts.
