Description
Nos. 15 and 17 High Street is a pair of shops that have been combined into one. The building dates from the 17th century and has been partly rebuilt and extended in the early and late 19th century. It features a timber frame that has been refaced and extended with lime-washed coursed limestone rubble and cement rendered brick, topped with a graded slate roof. The structure likely originally consisted of two framed bays and is two storeys tall at the front and three storeys at the rear. There is a semi-integral brick end stack on the left side, and No. 17 slightly projects forward.
On the first floor, there is an early- to mid-19th century margin-light sash window on the left and a mid- to late-19th century four-pane sash window on the right. The left side has a complete early-19th century shop front, which includes a bowed small-paned shop window to the right with a frieze and cornice, and a two-leaf six flush-panelled door to the left, framed by a panelled-pilastered surround and a bracketed straight hood. The right side features a mid- to late-19th century shop front with a two-part plate glass shop window, a four-panelled door to the left (with the top two panels glazed), a four-panelled passageway door to the right, and a bracketed fascia. Inside, there are remains of the timber frame, which show evidence of raised eaves. The building is included in the listing because of its shop front.
