Description

No. 26, High Street is a house, now a shop, dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid- to late-19th century. The building is timber frame construction with rough cast rendering, a painted limestone rubble plinth, and a slate roof. The front of the building was rebuilt in painted and stuccoed brick. It has a roughly L-shaped plan, with two framed bays forming a right angle with the road. The house has a semi-basement, two storeys, and an attic at the rear, and includes two ridge stacks at the rear. The upper floor has two mid- to late-19th century segmental-headed windows, one with tripartite glazing bar sash windows, and the other a replacement 20th-century casement. A late-19th century shop front features two plate glass shop windows, flanking a blocked recessed doorway with fascia and cornice above. A six-panelled door, with glazed upper panels and rectangular overlight, is located to the left; a carriageway is on the right. The south front displays an exposed sole plate and 18th-century glazing bar sash windows. The interior includes a 17th-century queen-strut truss with V-struts in the attic at the rear, and a ground floor front room with a ceiling featuring chamfered and stopped cross-beams. The building is designated as having group value.
