Description

Number 28, including stores and garage to the rear, is probably a former stable building, now used as a shop, stores, and garage. It dates to the mid-17th century, with alterations and partial remodelling in the mid- to late-19th century and front refacing in the mid- to late-20th century. The building is timber framed with weatherboarding, brick facing to the north side, rendering to the rear, and a cement rendering to the front. The roof is slate and corrugated iron. It has six framed bays, square panels with short corner braces (now concealed). It is one storey and attic. There is a toothed brick eaves cornice to the north-west and two late-19th century gabled eaves dormers to the north-west, each with a two-light leaded casement. The front has two mid- to late-20th century two-light casements and a central mid- to late-19th century half-glazed panelled door. A late-19th century lean-to is at the rear, with a corrugated asbestos roof. Inside, there is a double purlin roof with queen strut trusses and V-struts above collars. The main frame-posts are chamfered and stopped up to moulded capitals below the junctions with rails and main transverse floor beams. Short chamfered and stopped posts with moulded capitals and short corner braces support the main transverse floor beams in the centre. It is possible that the building was once at least partly open-fronted to the north, as evidenced by chamfered posts with no mortise evidence below the moulded capitals. One possible use of the building was for stabling and carriage accommodation.
