Description
This building, originally a house and later divided into two shops, is now a single shop and flat. It dates to 1629, but was refaced in the early 19th century with shop fronts added in the late 19th century. The construction is stucco, designed to look like ashlar, likely over coursed limestone rubble, and has a slate roof. The building has a basement, two storeys, and an attic.
Deep eaves are present, along with a gabled dormer on the left side featuring a two-light casement window. A central external stack from the 17th century is located at the rear, with a brick top stage. The front of the building has four windows. The first floor features a glazing bar sash window on the left, while two mid to late 19th century cross windows are on the right. A late 19th century canted bay window is positioned off-centre to the left. The shop fronts are also late 19th century; the right-hand shop front has a three-part plate glass window, a half-glazed door to the left, and a half-glazed door to the right with twin glazing bar sashes above. The left-hand shop front features a large plate glass window and a half-glazed door to the left. A boarded passageway door to the left has a rectangular overlight and a lintel inscribed "DAVED MORRISTAN CR MDCIXXX."
The interior includes a late 17th century staircase with three flights around a narrow rectangular well, a landing, winders, a moulded closed string, turned balusters, a moulded grip rail, and square newel posts with globe finials. The first floor has corner fireplaces, one with an 18th century moulded architrave. C17 brickwork is visible in the cellar.
Although the front of the building is not particularly prominent today, the interior, especially the staircase, is of considerable merit.
