Description
Nos. 16 and 18 Market Square are a pair of houses, now functioning as two shops with flats, dating from around 1800. They are constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring a 20th-century interlocking concrete-tile roof on the left side and a corrugated asbestos roof on the right. The buildings rise three storeys and have a plinth, a dentil brick eaves cornice, a central ridge stack, and a semi-integral end stack on the right.
The first and second floors each have four bays, with segmental-headed glazing bar sashes. The two right-hand bays have been replaced with 20th-century casements. On the ground floor, there is an off-centre glazing bar sash window to the right, alongside a complete early 19th-century shop front to the right. This shop front features a small-paned flat-bow shop window on the right and a six-panelled door to the left, with the centre panels glazed. It has flush-panelled reveals, a pilastered surround, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. The left side has a mid- to late-19th-century shop front with two plate glass windows flanking a central half-glazed door, also with a pilastered surround, fascia, and a bracketed hood. There is a half-glazed 20th-century door off-centre to the left, flanked by unfluted half columns and a flat hood, as well as a central boarded passageway door with a segmental head. The buildings are included in the listing due to the complete early 19th-century shop front and for their group value.
