Description

Nos 1 and 2 The Square is a house that has been divided into two dwellings, dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick infill and has plain tiled roofs. It is designed in an L-shape, with the main section consisting of four framed bays aligned east to west, and external chimneys with tiled offsets at the gable ends. A single-bay wing projects from the front of the east gable end chimney. The structure is partly two storeys and partly single storey with an attic that features dormers.

The framing of the main part includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses that have struts at the gable ends. The wing is jettied at the front and east side on shaped brackets, featuring two rows of panels both above and below the jetty, and long straight braces across the lower corners of both storeys. The south gable end has a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts to the collar and a concave V-strut at the apex.

On the south front elevation, the cottage on the left has two 2-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a central ledged and battened door. The cottage on the right features two 20th-century 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, a full gabled dormer with paired 20th-century rectangular lights, and a first-floor 2-light casement in the gable end of the wing. The main entrance below has a 20th-century half-glazed door. All ground floor windows and the first-floor window of the wing have plank weatherings. This building is part of a group of structures surrounding The Square.
