Description

A row of four cottages, dating from the 17th century with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The construction is a mix of timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, and painted brick, all with plain tiled roofs. The cottages are aligned north/south. Wrights Cottage, at the southern end, comprises two framed bays with a chimney in the north bay and a large brick ridge stack. Lynbury and the adjoining Wrights Cottage (between Lynbury and Maypole Cottage) form a four-bay block with a central chimney and brick ridge stack. Maypole Cottage is a two-bay brick addition at the northern end and has a central chimney and ridge stack. Wrights Cottage has two storeys and an attic with dormers. The timber framing shows three rows of panels at first floor level. A collar and tie-beam truss with three struts and a V-strut, is visible at the north gable end. The west front of Wrights Cottage includes a 3-light ground floor casement, a pair of 2-light first floor casements, and a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement. There is an entrance to the left. Lynbury and the adjoining Wrights Cottage have a single storey and attic with dormers. The west front elevation includes a 3-light and a single-light casement, a 2-light casement, a square stairlight, and three gabled dormers with pendant finials and 2-light casements. Entrances are to the left side of each cottage and have gabled canopies on shaped brackets. Maypole Cottage’s west front includes a 3-light ground floor casement, a gabled dormer with a pendant finial, and a 2-light casement, with an entrance to the left and a gabled canopy. The interiors were not inspected. The cottages occupy a prominent position in the village centre.
