Description

Garden Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and restoration in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill, a rubble plinth, and a roof covered in fishscale tiles. The building has two framed bays aligned east to west and a large central rubble chimney with a rebuilt brick stack on the north side of the ridge. It is a single storey with an attic that includes dormers.

On the north elevation, there are four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, along with large straight lower corner braces. The tie-beam truss is visible at the west gable end. The south front elevation has two 2-light casement windows on the ground floor, one of which has a cambered head, and two gabled dormers with 2-light casements. The main entrance, located to the right of center, features a 20th-century gabled timber porch with brick and glazed infill on the sides and a 19th-century ledged and battened door.

Inside, the roof structure and the wall frame at the west end are intact, and the central chimney has back-to-back fireplaces. The floor in the east bay is likely an insertion. There is a 20th-century additional bay at the east gable end, which includes double glazed doors and a gabled dormer on the south front elevation, as well as a 20th-century single-storey addition at the west gable end.
