Description
Byfield is a house dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is timber-framed with brick and rendered infill set on a rubble base, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building features two framed bays that are aligned east to west, and it has external rubble chimneys with brick stacks at each gable end; notably, the east end chimney is very large and includes tiled offsets and a detached stack. The house is two storeys high.
The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with a long straight brace across the central lower corner of the west bay on the front elevation, and a short straight upper corner brace visible at the west end. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and V-struts above the collar.
On the south front elevation, there are two three-light casements on the ground floor and a two-light casement on the first floor. The central entrance features a 19th-century gabled timber porch with a half-glazed door. Additionally, there is a single-storey wing with a hipped roof adjoining the east end, which has a ledged and battened door in its south elevation.
