Description
Somerville Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which was remodelled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick, with part of the south end and rear rendered, and features a plain tiled roof. The building has an L-plan layout, with the main section being a three-bay range oriented north to south. This section includes a large chimney in the northernmost bay, which has a diagonal brick ridge stack, suggesting a probable lobby-entry plan. There is a rear wing of one bay to the north-west.
The cottage is a single storey with an attic that has dormers and a cellar. A two-course band runs at the first floor level. On the west front elevation, there are two ground floor three-light casement windows with gauged flat heads, and a central gabled dormer also featuring a three-light casement. The entrance is located at the north end, which has a lean-to porch supported by brackets and a 20th-century door. The gable ends have attic lights, and a single-course band steps to form a hood above these lights. Additionally, there are two square cellar windows at the south gable end. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to retain some framing. Somerville Cottage is part of a group of buildings surrounding The Square.
