Description

Hillview is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century and mid-20th century. The building features part timber framing with painted brick infill, painted brick replacement walling, and additions on a sandstone rubble base, topped with fishscale and plain tiled roofs. It has an L-shaped plan, with the main section consisting of two framed bays aligned north to south. There is a large external rubble chimney with a brick stack located to the southeast, which is enclosed within a single-bay wing. The house is partly two storeys with an attic and cellar, and partly single storey.

The framing includes four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The collar and tie-beam truss at the north gable end has been partly rebuilt, and the south gable end has been rebuilt in brick. On the south front elevation, the gable end of the framed section to the left features a ground and first floor 3-light casement with cambered heads, an attic light, and double doors leading into the cellar. The single-storey wing to the right is built on a platform cut out of the adjacent sandstone outcrop and has a ground floor with a 2-light casement and a 20th-century main entrance door, which is approached by a flight of steps with a wrought iron balustrade.

Inside, the south bay of the main part has stop-chamfered main beams supported on a large console, beneath which is a large open fireplace.
