Description
Somerville Barn is a 17th-century barn that has been converted into a house. It was restored in the late 20th century and features a timber-framed structure with rendered infill on a rubble base and a plain tiled roof. The barn is likely composed of six framed bays aligned north to south and includes a large central rubble chimney with a brick stack. It is a single storey with an attic.
The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with a collar and tie-beam truss supported by two struts at the north gable end. The east front elevation has five two-light casement windows, three skylights, and a central lean-to porch supported by timber posts, which features a multi-paned door. There is also a lean-to porch to the right with a glazed door and a side light. The gable ends have attic lights.
Inside, the barn retains a significant portion of its roof structure and cross-frames. The inserted chimney has back-to-back fireplaces. There are 20th-century brick additions to the south end bay. Somerville Barn is part of a group of buildings surrounding The Square.
