Description

Bayton Cottage is a house dating from around 1600, which was restored in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building consists of three framed bays arranged north to south, with a large rubble chimney and brick ridge stack in the central bay, which also serves as a lobby entrance. The house has two storeys, and its framing includes four rows of small panels from the sill to the wall-plate, long straight braces at the lower corners of both storeys, and collar and tie-beam trusses at the gable ends with two collars, four struts to the lower collar, and two to the upper collar. There are continuous plank weatherings at the first floor level and at the first floor window sill level, as well as at the tie-beam and collar level at the gable ends.

On the east front elevation, the windows are primarily leaded casements. The ground floor features a 3-light window and a 2-light window, while the first floor has a 3-light window, a square light, and a rectangular light. There is a central 20th-century gabled porch, with a 2-light window to the left of the door in the gable end and 3-light windows in the side elevations.

Inside, the cottage has stop-chamfered main beams and back-to-back fireplaces, with the north-facing fireplace featuring a 17th-century overmantel. The ground floor also includes 17th-century panelling, and although the staircase has been altered, it remains in its original position at the rear of the chimney. A 20th-century lean-to has been added at the rear. Bayton Cottage is part of a group of buildings that surround The Square.
