Description
Plowstall Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse with alterations from the mid- to late 19th century and the mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, brick replacement walling and refacing, and pebble-dashed first floor. The roofs are of plain and fishscale tiles, half-hipped to the east side. The farmhouse has a hall and cross-wing plan; the hall is three bays wide, aligned east/west, with a chimney inserted into what was likely a through-passage. The cross-wing is at the west gable end and is two bays wide.
The hall has some upper panels visible at the rear, and a truncated collar and tie-beam truss at the east gable end with three struts to the collar. The cross-wing has a row of large panels at first floor level on its west side elevation and at the rear. Short straight braces are in the upper corners, and the rear has a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts to the collar and a V-strut in the apex.
The south front of the hall has two 2-light casements with cambered heads, and three first-floor 2-light casements. An entrance adjacent to the cross-wing has a ledged and battened door with a cambered head. The cross-wing gable end has a ground and first floor 3-light casement.
The interior was not inspected, but the wall-frame and roof structure are said to be largely intact. The front wall of the cross-wing was rebuilt after the collapse of a mine shaft beneath it.
