Description
1 and 3 The Square are two houses that were formerly one building, dating from the late 18th century. An additional top storey was added in the early 19th century, and there have been 20th-century alterations to the rear. The houses are constructed of pale red brick with a granite rubble plinth, while the right gable and rear are roughcast and whitewashed. The roof is covered with 20th-century interlocking tiles and features brick chimneys.
The structure is L-shaped, with a former service wing at the rear, and stands three storeys high with three bays. There is a moulded band course at the first floor level and a raised brick string at the second floor. The 19th-century windows are wooden casements with three lights, all having cambered heads except for those on the second floor. The ground floor windows have horizontal glazing bars only, while the upper windows feature cross glazing bars. Between the right bays, above the door, there is a two-light casement on the first floor and a blind panel on the second floor. The second floor window adjacent to the left is also blind.
The main entrance is a six-panelled door set in a 19th-century wooden doorcase that includes pilasters, a panelled frieze, and a small cornice hood supported by cut scroll brackets. A 20th-century door has been inserted between the left bays. The rear wing is two storeys tall and has irregular openings.
