Description

The ruins of the Old Church of St Peter date from the late 13th to 14th century. Constructed from granite rubble with limestone dressings, the church currently has no roof. It features a cruciform plan with a nave, chancel, and small transepts. The building has a chamfered plinth and various buttresses. The nave includes a projection for a former bellcote at the west end and one bay of arched windows, with the north side retaining Y-tracery. There are small arched doorways on the north and south sides, both moulded and chamfered with a middle order on attached shafts. The transepts have lancet windows with hoodmoulds on their west sides. The south transept also features a 2-light south window with a hoodmould and iron bars replacing the tracery, along with a blocked single light to the east. The north transept is mostly missing. Between the transepts and the nave are low wide arches of two chamfered orders, with the inner order resting on corbels. The chancel has two bays of 2-light traceried windows on the south side, with uncusped lower lights, quatrefoils above, and hoodmoulds with carved head stops. There is a lower 2-light window to the left with cusped tracery. The north side of the chancel has a lancet window at the west end and a small chamfered doorway with an arch on imposts. The large arched 4-light east window features intersecting tracery, though part of it is missing.
