Description

This is an 18th and 19th century stucco villa located on Wellington Road in Edgbaston. It was likely built around 1825-1830, possibly before the adjacent number 79. The building is constructed with a stucco facade over brick, and originally featured three bays, with a one-bay extension that once housed a coach house. The first floor of this extension was added later. The villa has a plinth, a moulded bed to the shallow flat eaves of a half-hipped slate roof, and a stucco chimney stack. The upper floor has plainly revealed sash windows with glazing bars, the central window being narrower and blind. The original right-hand ground floor window was set within a shallow round arched panel. Around 1840-1850, the left-hand ground floor window was replaced by a projecting canted bay window with glazing bar sash windows, a frieze, and a cornice. This addition is contemporary with and linked to a similar feature at number 79. The central entrance is surrounded by a double order of architrave and archivolt arch, with impost blocks. Above the door is an archivolt arched fanlight with marginal glazing, above a six-panel door framed by slender pilasters. The extension includes segmental arched coach house doors and a passage entry.
