Description
This is an 18th and 19th century villa, originally built around 1800 and located on George Road in Edgbaston. It is a tall, detached three-story building with a symmetrical three-bay front. The villa was likely originally constructed of red brick, but was remodelled in the 1830s using Grecian-style stucco. A lower two-story wing extends to the right, and a one-story wing with annexes returns to a coach house, featuring a hipped slate roof along the street frontage.
Architectural details include a plinth, a moulded eaves cornice to the hipped slate roof, and flanking stucco chimney stacks with stepped cornices. All windows feature simple architrave surrounds and retain their original glazing bar sashes. A tripartite Venetian porch sits at the center, with a segmental arch supported by four square piers. These piers have Soanian incised panels and support a heavy entablature and blocking course, raised as a pediment over the center. The two-story wing to the right mirrors the fenestration of the main block. The rear garden elevation displays a pair of two-story bows flanking the doorway.
Historically, a folly known as the Round House (located at 16 St James’s Road) was originally situated within the grounds of No. 29 and was later sold off.
