Description
Nos 27 and 28 Frederick Road are an early pair of semi-detached villas from around 1820-1830, located in the Calthorpe Estate area of Edgbaston. These two-storey buildings are faced with stucco and each features three bays with a central doorway and flanking former coach houses. The plinth and first-floor sill course extend across both villas. They have hipped slate roofs with shallow flat eaves and a central stucco chimney stack.
No 27 retains its original revealed glazing bar sashes, while No 28 has plate glass windows. The ground floor windows are set in shallow camber-arched panels that extend down to the plinth. One of the windows in No 28 has been replaced by a rectangular bay window from around 1870, topped with a scallop-slated pent roof. Both villas have round-headed doorways flanked by slender fluted Tuscan columns that support an entablature below a fanlight with an inverted fan pattern and moulded arches.
No 27 features a slightly recessed screen wall with a side entrance leading to the former coach house, which has a blind segmental arched panel. No 28 has a similar screen wall, but its coach house doors have been heightened by one storey to accommodate a substantial wing added around 1900, which includes an oriel window above the archway. Some alterations have been made to No 28.
