Description

Nos. 11 and 12 Charlotte Road are a pair of stucco villas built around 1840, located in Edgbaston. These two-storey buildings are narrowly detached and feature symmetrical three-bay fronts that were originally identical, with coach houses on either side. Each villa has a plinth, a first-floor string course, and a moulded bed to the frieze, along with unboxed eaves beneath a gable end slate roof. The tall chimneys are corniced.

The central bay of each villa is slightly advanced. The first-floor windows are surrounded by architraves with moulded cornices supported by consoles, while the outer windows have vestigial pediments. No. 12 retains its original ground floor windows, which are set in eaved architraves with splayed feet and apron panels down to the plinth, flanked by volutes. In contrast, No. 11 features rectangular bay windows from around 1850, adorned with Ionic pilasters and entablatures.

Both houses have deep porches supported by Ionic columns, complete with entablatures and blocking courses. The double doors consist of six moulded panels and rectangular fanlights, with moulded doorheads extending over panelled reveals. The coach houses on either side are screened by walls; the coach house of No. 11 has a return wall that slopes down to serve as a garden wall to Gough Road, which includes a segmental arched doorway flanked by piers.
